“The Treelog” is an experiment after the philosophical approach of Idealism to overcome the separation between nature, technology and mind.

For this purpose the approach to nature is transformed into a technological experience. The artworks appearance is imitating the nature and is detecting the movement within a meter of its surrounding. The motion sensor is disguised as a red flower (rafflesia). This close contact to the flower is a quantitative and measurable approach which will communicated to the mushrooms. They start to blink in different colors. The mushrooms on the top of the log are growing out of the dead wood. The dead wood log won’t perceived as dead anymore- more as a source for the flower – mushroom symbiosis.

Der deutsche Philosoph Friedrich Schelling (1775-1854) beschrieb in seiner Philosophie des Idealismus die Gefahr der Entwurzelung des menschlichen Geistes zu seiner Natur. Wenn die Natur zum Objekt gemacht wird, so Friedrich Schelling, so spaltet sich der Mensch von ihr ab und zerstört seine ursprüngliche Identität.

The German Philosoph Friedrich Schelling (1775-1854) describes in his philosophy of Idealism the threat of uprooting of the human mind to its nature. Schelling assumes that in the case the nature becomes an simple object- the human will split apart from his nature and destroys its original identity.

(Free translation: “As long I am identical with nature, I understand the living nature- as good as I understand my own life. However the minute I separate from all ideal of nature, it remains as an dead object. And I stop realizing how a life next to me is possible.”

The goal of the philosophy of German Idealism is to understand the holistic nature through perception, awareness and intelligence. By approaching nature the way is paved for self cognition. These is an approach to overcome the separation of the human mind and nature. ‘The Treelog’ is using every day technology to sensitize the homo digitalis of our times of the threat of the uprooting of the human mind to its nature.
